abject的基本意思有二，用于生活环境、事物的状态等时指“凄惨的，糟透的，可怜的，蹩脚的，绝望无助的”，即境况极为恶劣，有时仅指事物本身等级低或规模小；用于人或人的行为、动作时指“卑鄙的，可鄙的，下贱的，自卑的，怯懦的，奴性的，卑躬屈节的”，即地位卑下或奴颜卑膝。abject还可作“被抛弃的，遭拒绝的”解，是废语。
abject作“凄惨的，绝望的”解时在句中只用作定语；作“卑鄙的，下贱的”解时在句中多用作定语，偶尔（尤在美语中）也可用作表语。
abject不用于比较等级，但可用more、most修饰。

abject,mean, ignoble,sordid: 这组词都用于指人、人的行为以及人们所处的条件非常低劣、卑下以致失去人类的尊严或不符合人类生活、品质的普遍准则的意思，其区别是：

abject一般指境况极为恶劣，地位卑下或奴颜卑膝，有时仅指事物本身等级低或规模小；sordid强调作风上和思想上的腐化或堕落；mean暗示狠毒、贪婪等为人类社会所不齿的卑鄙、自私的行为或态度；而ignoble则指思想境界或灵魂低下，但通常不含自私、小气的意思。例如：

The prostitute wrote a book about her sordid life. 那妓女写了一本关于自己腐化生活的书。

How could anyone so mean! 一个人怎么能如此不要脸！

To betray one's country is ignoble. 叛国是为人所不齿的。
