用法讲解

conj. (连词)
  1. but的基本意思相当于in spite of this或表示与所预料的不一样,意为“但是,然而,尽管如此”，不与though,although连用。
  2. but可用来表达诸如愤怒、吃惊等强烈的感情，用来加强语气，也可用在表示歉意的句子里，常不译出，还可用于改变话题，意为“无论如何”“反正”“好”。
  3. 如果but接动词不定式,当前面有do或cannot时,不定式不带to; 当前面有anything, everything, nothing等词时,不定式常不带to,但也有例外; 其余情况带to。
  4. 与but连用的too...to do结构不具有否定意义。
  5. 如果主句含有hardly,never,never so,not so,not such等词，可用but,but that或but what引导表示结果的状语从句，构成双重否定，相当于that...not或unless，译作“没有…不”“若…，就一定”。
  6. 如果but that引出的分句描述的是真实情况，而主句描述的是非真实的情况，则主句多用虚拟语气，此时译作“假如没有…”“要不是”
  7. not but that...是it is not but that的省略法, but无否定意义,译作“虽然…可是…”。
  8. 在not...but...结构里，可以不借助do(does)来否定动词，而否定其他成分，译作“不是…而是”。
  9. not that...but that...相当于not because...but because...,译作“不是…而是…”。
  10. 否定词+doubt(或deny, question等)+but that中的but that相当于that, but无否定意义,常可省略。
  11. 在may...but...中，may常具有让步的含义。
prep. (介词)
  1. but用作介词时表示“除…以外”,通常与表示确切意思的词，如no,all,any,every,each,none,nobody,anywhere等以及疑问词，如who,where,what等连用，但不能与some,many,several等表示不确切意思的词连用。所以，我们可以说all but one,但不能说some but one或many but one。也可与最高级形容词连用。其后面可以是名词、介词短语、形容词等。
  2. but用作介词一般不置于句首。
  3. but引导的短语后置于主语之后时，句中谓语应该和主语在人称和数上保持一致。
  4. the last〔next〕 but one〔two, three, etc.〕的意思是“倒数第二、三、四…”,这种用法在英式英语中比较常见。

  • 这两个词都表示“除…外”。but和except都表示从整体中除去部分,但在but的句子里,着重在整体; 在用except的句子里,着重在除去的部分。

  • 1.however是一个词, how ever是两个词,其中第二个词ever起加强语气的作用。
  • 2.however和no matter how的意思都是“不管…怎样”,但前者为书面语; 后者多用于口语。
  • 3.but和however用作连词时,都可以连接两个相反的观念和事物,但but所表示的是非常明显的对比,其连接部分必须是两个并列对等的成分; however是正式的用语,通常连接两个句子或作插入语用,是将后者和前者加以比较从而看出后者和前者意思相反。
    • besides，but，except，except for
  • 这些前置词或短语均含“除……之外”之意。
  • besides着重于指另外还有。
  • but侧重指不包括在内。
  • except侧重于排除在外，从整体里减去。可与but换用，但语气较强。
  • except for多用于在说明基本情况或对主要部分加以肯定，还引出相反的原因或细节，从而部分地修正前面的主要意思，含惋惜意味。
    • but，however，still，yet，nevertheless，while，whereas
  • 这些连词或副词均含“但是，可是，然而，而”之意。
  • but口语常用词，语气较强，泛指与前述情况相反。
  • however表转折关系，语气稍弱于but，连接性也弱一些，因而常作插入语。
  • still语气强，多用于肯定句或疑问句。指尽管作出让步，采取措施或表示反对，但情况仍然如故，无所改变。
  • yet常用于否定句，语气比still稍强。指不管作出多大努力或让步，仍达不到预期的结果。
  • nevertheless指尽管作出完全让步，也不会发生任何影响。
  • while表对比，一般可与whereas换用，但程度弱一些。
  • whereas表对比，一般可与while互换。
    • but，however
  • 这两个连词都有“但是，可是，然而”之意。
  • but连接两个分句或有关部分，表示转折或逻辑上的对比关系，使用最广，口语中更为常见。
  • however转折意味比but弱，连接的两个分句或有关部分的关系较为松弛，后一部分常起附带说明或衬托作用。however常以插入语形式出现在句子中间，前后用逗号隔开，也可置于句首或句末。
    • cabin，cottage，but，shed
  • 这些名词均含有“小屋”之意。
  • cabin多指建造粗糙的简陋小木屋，也指旅客或船员住的船舱。现在也指节假日旅游者的简便住房。
  • cottage指穷苦人住的乡间小茅屋。现在也指雅致的小住宅，在美国可指别墅。
  • but多指供居住或遮避风雨的简易小屋。
  • shed一般指四壁没有完全封闭，供牲畜用或储藏东西、停放车辆等的简易棚屋。
