用法讲解

v. (动词)
  1. envy的基本意思是“羡慕”,指羡慕别人的好运气或好境况,有时表示由此产生不快或不满,强调“想要而得不到”。
  2. envy和否定词连用时,常表示一种温和的惋惜、同情,也常表示庆幸自己未曾遭遇到对方那样的麻烦或不幸。
  3. envy作及物动词时,意思是“忌妒,羡慕”,后可接简单宾语、双宾语,也可以在宾语后接for加动名词等结构,但不能接从句。
  4. envy间或用作不及物动词,后接at加名词或动名词,意思是“感到羡慕”。

  • 这两个词都可译为“羡慕”,但含义并不相同：envy不仅含有“羡慕别人所拥有的东西或品质”的意思,而且进一步有“我也要拥有”的含义。例如：
  • 真羡慕你!我多希望能有那么一头卷发!
  • ［误］ How I admire you!I wish I could make my hair curl like that.
  • ［正］ How I envy you! I wish I could make my hair curl like that.
  • 本句所羡慕的只是那一头卷发,并不见得钦佩那个有一头卷发的人,而且明确表示“希望能有”,故用envy。
