n. (名词)
  1. lord的基本意思是“主人”,即“支配者,统治者”,如领主、君主、诸侯等。首字母大写时可作“上帝,基督,主”解,这时常与定冠词连用。Lord则可用作对“上帝,基督,主”的称呼。
  2. 在英国lord还可指“贵族”(duke, marquess, earl, viscount, baron)。the Lord(与定冠词连用,首字母大写时)还可指“上院议员”,The Lords用作主语,其谓语动词用单数形式时指“上议院”,用复数形式时则指“上院议员们”。Lord或my Lord可用于对侯爵以下的贵族、上院议员、主教、市长、高等法院法官等的称呼,相当于“阁下”,正式称呼时加上姓名或只用姓。
  3. Lord knows的意思是“天知道”,表示惊讶、担心时人们常说的“Oh Lord!”“Great Lord!”意思是“啊!”“天啊!”“我的天!”,注意这两种说法有人认为含冒犯意。
